Ahhh spring... the time of year when our thoughts turn to backyard get-togethers, evenings on the porch, and family fun time outside. It also means it is time to uncover your outdoor furnishings and fountains and get them ready for the outdoor fun times ahead. If you follow these few simple tips you will be ready to relax on your patio in no time!

Check your furniture. Once you have taken your furniture out of the shed or removed the protective covers, it is time to give them a quick once-over. Check for missing feet caps on metal furniture, tighten any loose screws on all-weather poly-resin furniture, and check to make sure the pump house in your fountain is free of leaves, grass, and other small debris before filling the fountain with water and turning it on. Once you have assessed your furniture, if any small, replaceable parts like feet cap are missing or damaged, stop by our store to see our selection of feet caps and spare parts.

Clean. Simply hose off or wipe down your outdoor furniture frames and cushions to remove any loose dirt. Check the cushions for any stains that might have gone unnoticed during the season. Most stains can be removed with a mild soap and water solution. Tougher stains can be treated with outdoor fabric cleaner in lukewarm water, loosening the stain with a sponge or soft-bristle brush. Make sure to double rinse the cushions to remove the stain as well as any cleaner residue, and give the cushions plenty of time to dry completely before putting them on your outdoor furniture. Bare wood furniture as well as wood furniture with a protective finish can simply be hosed off to remove any loose dirt.

Protect. While you have your furniture and cushions uncovered and clean is the best time to use a protectant if you choose to do so. We carry a full line of products that will restore lost color and provide UV protection for your outdoor furniture as well as give your outdoor fabrics a water repellent coating. Follow manufacturer’s directions when applying any oil or protective coating to your outdoor wood furniture.

Tables. If your outdoor furniture tables are metal or wood, follow the above directions accordingly. However, if you have a tile, granite, or marble top table now is the best time to apply a sealant. Follow manufacturer’s directions when applying a sealing agent to your tile, granite, or marble table top. You will know when it is time to re-apply the sealant when you sprinkle some water on the table and it sinks into the stone. If it beads up then your sealant is still doing its job. Most stone tables left outside all season benefit from having a sealant applied at least twice a year.

The color blue is great for outside. It complements the natural surroundings of your backyard, yet stands out on its own against the most colorful of backgrounds. Using blue to brighten up your backyard is simple if you keep these tips in mind:

Think ocean. The ocean comes in a wide variety of blue hues, anything from crystal clear turquoise in the Caribbean to the deep midnight blue of the wild Pacific. These shades and everything in between look perfect surrounded by the lush greens and neutrals found outside. All shades of blue are big this season so make the most of it and choose a shade of blue that will look good when you’re gazing out from inside, yet brightens up your outdoor space when you’re hanging out on the patio.

Go wild. With all the beautiful shades of blue available, why pick just one? A soothing spa blue on your outdoor furniture looks great with a cluster or two of bright cobalt pots on the patio and a lovely turquoise firepot on the coffee table. Unlike reds this season anything goes in blue, so pick your favorite shade (or three!) and have fun adding blue to your outdoor space.

Don’t fear color. Many people shy away from using color outside because they are afraid it will show more dirt and stains than neutrals. This used to be the case, but now most outdoor fabrics come with stain resistant qualities and if kept clean will continue to look great year after year. There are even products made for outdoor fabrics that enhance their water and stain resistance and can easily be applied annually. Fabric technology has come leaps and bounds since everything outside was plastic. Embrace this new technology and the freedom to choose color for your outdoor space. Why not blue?

Mix it up. Hanging patio lights alone are good, but candles on the dining table, fireballs around the pool, a firepit by the casual seating area, and hanging patio lights is better. Fireballs do double duty by keeping the mosquitoes away when used with citronella oil, candles add ambiance and who doesn’t want to cuddle up around the cozy firepit catching up with friends or family roasting marshmallows? Each of these elements work together beautifully to create the perfect scene for your next outdoor gathering.

Create a focal point. While more is better when it comes to outdoor lighting, it is best to find one type and make it stand out. Have umbrellas outside? Wrap party lights up the pole and around the edge. Have a pergola or patio overhang? Run lights around the perimeter and through the middle for plenty of light and visual impact. If your overhang is high enough, outdoor chandeliers make a great statement piece to complete your outdoor lighting. Firepits make a perfect focal point for almost any outdoor space and are a wonderful way to make the backyard feel just like home.

Lights for all seasons.  When Will Rogers said, “If you don't like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it’ll change,” he could not have been more correct. When choosing outdoor lighting for your backyard, keep in mind that in Oklahoma we can have sixty degree days in January. Party lights are fun for the duration of the event or through the spring weather, but commercial grade outdoor lights are made to withstand year-round weather and firepits that run on propane or natural gas can be lit and ready to enjoy in seconds any time of the year.

Neutrals tend to get a pretty bad reputation for being boring. However, when it comes to outdoor furnishings, at Seasonal Living we tend to disagree. Outdoor fabrics are meant to withstand the elements, and neutrals in particular are a great choice for outdoor furniture. They tend to hide dirt well, and can accommodate other brightly colored accessories that can be changed out on a whim without doing a major backyard overhaul. Even with this amount of practicality, neutrals don’t have to be boring if you follow these simple tips:

Neutral patterns are still neutral. Whether you choose a simple design that is more texture than pattern or a grand floral print, don’t be scared to use a pattern that is made up of neutral hues. It will still act like a neutral, allowing you to add in brighter, more vibrant colors as you wish.

Think chocolate. All shades of brown and grey are available on outdoor furniture and would complement any outdoor space, but the most modern hues are dark chocolate and rich caramel. These colors do double duty by hiding the wear and tear of outdoor life (dirt, rain, grass, pets, etc.) while still looking great. Add some red throw pillows or blue fireballs to the patio and see just how elegant your outdoor space can be.

Don’t go overboard. While we recommend neutral tones for outdoor furnishings, we don’t recommend only neutral tones for outdoor furnishings. Let your sofa and loveseat be chocolate brown and your spring chairs be a lovely gold, or let your chat set be a textured grey and your chaise lounges a grey and blue stripe. Use neutrals as your base color, but don’t forget to perk up this otherwise one-note shade.

Outside is the perfect place to use your favorite shade of hot pink or cobalt blue that just didn’t seem to go with anything inside the house, and accessories are the best way to do this. Fun colors on outdoor accessories brighten your outdoor space and can make your backyard feel like home. Outdoor accessories are often bright, fun colors because they contrast nicely with the neutral colors and greens found in nature. So have fun with color outside in your accessories, it will make all the difference.

Change it up. So you spent some money on your outdoor furniture a couple of years ago and everything is still like new, but you want a fresh look. Accessories are your answer. A new set of throw pillows for the sofa and loveseat, a fresh rug on the patio, new glazed pots by the window, firepots around the pool, and some pretty butterflies on the wall go a long way to creating a new look and feel for your outdoor space without breaking the bank or starting from scratch.

Drain fountains. Fountains should be turned off and completely drained of any water. Birdbaths should also be fully drained and any moisture from the season (snow, rain, sleet, etc.) should not be left standing in either your fountain or birdbath. Standing water in concrete left to freeze can crack concrete, resulting in a leak in your fountain or birdbath. 

Cover or store cushions and furniture. If possible, outdoor furniture cushions, throw pillows, and rugs should be stored away and out of the elements, and furniture frames covered throughout the winter. Moisture is a major concern for wooden and metal furniture, and quality, water-resistant covers help reduce the risk of rust, wood rot, mold and mildew. Also, never store extruded (hollow) metal furniture upside down during the winter months. Water and condensation can become trapped in the metal frame, freeze, and burst the frame.
